Halloween Movie Night: The Worst Witch

Growing up, and still to this day, one of my all time favorite Halloween movies is The Worst Witch. I don’t know how I first saw this movie, on TV one October in my youth, I’m sure. But I spent probably a good decade trying to hunt it down. I now own it, of course.

The movie stars a young Fairuza Balk as Mildred, the most awkward and, well, worst witch at a prestigious witch school. Even though Miss Hardbroom (played by Diana Rigg, or as you may know her from her more recent role as Olenna Tyrell in Game of Thrones) is very tough on her and would love to kick Mildred out, the headmistress, Miss Cackle (played by Charlotte Rae) has a soft spot for Mildred and never loses faith in the young witch.

In the end, Mildred of course saves the school from being attacked by Miss Cackle’s evil twin sister, but not before she embarrasses the whole school in front of The Grand Wizard, played by none other than Tim Curry. There are, if I remember correctly, two musical numbers in the whole movie, one of which must be shared.
